Good Day Pharmacy will now offer oral semaglutide as a medication that can be compounded on site and dispensed to patients. You may be familiar with Semaglutide by its injectable brand name Ozempic.
Although these medications were originally produced to treat patients with type 2 diabetes, their role within the field of medicine has expanded into the treatment of obesity. In 2017 Novo Nordisk first released Ozempic (a once weekly semaglutide injection) for type 2 diabetes and it was a smash hit. The medication showed that it was safe and effective as a diabetes treatment, but also that it had a major side benefit of causing significant weight loss in these patients. Unfortunately, many patients are hesitant to start an injectable medication and for this reason semaglutide, although very effective, was often seen as a more intense diabetes medication. Two years later Novo Nordisk released Rybelsus, an oral form of semaglutide that required no needles and instead was a once daily tablet taken by mouth.
Oral Semaglutide is still only recognized as a treatment for type 2 diabetes, but this will be changing very soon. In a study released in May of 2023, a 50mg daily dose of oral Semaglutide produced an average weight loss of 15.1% body weight in overweigh and obese trial participants. This far surpassed the 2.4% reduction seen in the placebo group over the 68-week trial period of the study. These reductions in body weight are comparable to the reductions seen in trials that proved Wegovy, another injectable form of Semaglutide, was effective for weight loss.
Semaglutide tablets can be compounded and are available to patients at the Good Day Pharmacy location in Fort Collins on Shields, and is to be used for type 2 diabetes treatment and weight loss.
