Your Heart Is Working Overtime. Here's How to Give It a Break.

Smiling family of four walks along a sunny neighborhood sidewalk lined with trees and houses.

Your heart beats more than 100,000 times a day — no days off, no complaints. So it's a little wild how easy it is to take it completely for granted.

Here's the part nobody loves to hear: heart disease is the #1 cause of death in the U.S., ahead of cancer, accidents, and stroke. And it's sneaky. It often gives zero warning before something serious happens. But here's the good news, and it's really good news: a lot of what protects your heart is simple, everyday stuff. Small changes, big payoff. At Good Day Pharmacy, we're big believers that prevention is one of the best medicines out there. So let's talk about what actually moves the needle.

First, Are You at Risk? (Spoiler: We All Are, a Little)

Heart disease doesn't play favorites, but a few things stack the deck. You've got a higher risk if any of these sound like you:

  • High blood pressure, cholesterol, or blood sugar

  • You smoke or use tobacco

  • You're carrying extra weight or don't move around much

  • Heart disease runs in your family

  • You drink more than a little, sleep too little, or run on stress

Feeling great and think none of this applies? Totally possible — but a lot of these are quiet troublemakers. Worth knowing your numbers anyway.

The Good Stuff: What Actually Protects Your Heart

You don't need a total life overhaul. You need a few habits that stick. Here's where to start.

Move your body (yes, walking counts). Aim for about 150 minutes a week. That's five 30-minute walks, or three bike rides, or a couple dance-party-in-the-kitchen sessions. Gardening, swimming, chasing your kids around the yard — it all counts. Bonus: make it a family thing so nobody has to be motivated alone.

Eat like your heart's watching. No complicated diet required. Swap a sweet snack for fruit, sneak veggies into soups and sandwiches, and pick whole grains when you can. Loose goal: 2 servings of fruit and about 2.5 servings of veggies a day.

Ease up on the salt. Too much sodium quietly raises your blood pressure. Try tasting your food before you reach for the shaker, lean on fresh or frozen over heavily processed, and peek at nutrition labels. Shoot for under 2,000 mg a day.

Know your numbers. Blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and weight rarely announce themselves early. A quick checkup tells you exactly where you stand, and what to do next.

Quit smoking (we can help). Smoking damages your blood vessels and cranks up your risk of a heart attack. The upside? Your body starts bouncing back almost immediately. Ready to quit? Ask your Good Day Pharmacist — we've got tools for that.

Find a healthy weight. Even modest weight loss lowers your risk across the board. And if lifestyle changes alone aren't cutting it, our team offers compounded GLP-1 medications that can support weight management alongside healthy habits. Ask us if it might be a fit.

Keep alcohol in check. Too much raises blood pressure and adds weight. If you drink, keep it moderate: up to one a day for women, two for men.

Sleep and stress are heart stuff too. Get 7 to 9 hours when you can, and give yourself real ways to decompress — a walk, deep breaths, prayer, time with people you love. Chronic stress and rough sleep wear on your heart just like the rest.

The theme here? Consistency. You don't have to be perfect. Just keep showing up for yourself.
