A New Study Just Exposed How Sketchy Online GLP-1 Sites Really Are (Here's How to Stay Safe)

If you've thought about trying a GLP-1 medication like semaglutide or tirzepatide, you've probably noticed something: the internet is flooded with websites promising a prescription in minutes.

Fast. Cheap. No waiting rooms. Sounds great, right?

Well, a brand-new study just pumped the brakes on that idea — and honestly, the findings are a little alarming.

Let's break down what researchers found, why it matters for your health, and how to get GLP-1 support without rolling the dice.

First, Why Is Everyone Turning to the Internet for GLP-1s?

Quick recap in case you're new here.

GLP-1 medications help manage type 2 diabetes and support weight loss, and demand has exploded. But two things push people online:

  • They're pricey. Brand-name GLP-1s can cost hundreds to over a thousand dollars a month.

  • Insurance is spotty. Lots of plans won't cover them for weight loss, so people pay out of pocket.

So when a website pops up promising the same meds for way less — with a five-minute sign-up — it's easy to see the appeal.

The problem is what happens behind that five-minute sign-up.

The Study: 45 Out of 49 Sites Handed Out a Prescription

On July 6, 2026, researchers at Yale published a "secret shopper" study in JAMA. The setup was simple: they created a fictional patient and tried to buy GLP-1s from 49 different websites.

Here's what they found:

  • 45 of the 49 sites issued a prescription for the fake patient.

  • Only about 1 in 4 (26.5%) required a video visit with a clinician.

  • Just 6% required even a phone call with a clinician.

  • Many prescriptions were approved in five minutes or less — sometimes even when required photos were missing.

To be fair, all 49 sites made the "patient" fill out a questionnaire. But a form is not the same as a conversation with a real provider who knows your history.

Why That Should Give You Pause

A questionnaire can't ask follow-up questions. It can't notice that a medication you take might clash with a GLP-1. It can't catch a health condition that makes the drug a bad fit for you.

As one healthcare attorney put it after the study came out, it's no surprise people are "getting prescriptions without having met with a true healthcare provider."

GLP-1s are powerful medications. They deserve real oversight — not a checkout cart.

So How Do You Know If a GLP-1 Provider Is Actually Legit?

Not every telehealth option is a red flag. The key is knowing what good care looks like. Before you hand over your info (or your credit card), look for these green flags:

  • You actually talk to a clinician. A real visit — not just a form — before anything is prescribed.

  • Someone follows up. Good providers check on your dosing, side effects, and progress over time.

  • There's a real pharmacy behind it. Licensed pharmacists you could actually reach, not an anonymous website.

  • You can find them in your community. A trusted local name beats a pop-up site you've never heard of.

If a provider skips these, that's your cue to walk away.

How Good Day Pharmacy Does GLP-1 Care the Right Way

This is exactly the gap our telehealth GLP-1 program was built to close.

Through Good Day Pharmacy and Cache Medical, you get the convenience of telehealth without giving up the safety the study says so many sites are missing:

  • Real clinician visits. You meet with a licensed provider who reviews your health before any prescription — not a five-minute questionnaire.

  • Ongoing support. We don't hand you a script and disappear. We help with dosing, answer questions, and check in as you go.

  • A local pharmacy you can trust. We're a real, established community pharmacy with licensed pharmacists you can actually talk to — by phone or in person.

You get the ease of doing it from home, backed by people who are accountable to you and your health.

The Bottom Line

The internet made GLP-1s easier to get than ever. This study is a reminder that "easy" and "safe" aren't always the same thing.

You deserve both.

If you're curious whether a GLP-1 could be a fit for you, we're happy to walk you through it — no pressure, just honest guidance from people you can actually reach.
